Who are usual residents?
Every person who has been, or intends to be in Bermuda for 6 months or more, as of Census Day, May 20th, 2026. Examples include:
1. Students / schoolchildren who live away from home during term time
All students or schoolchildren who live away from Bermuda during term time need to be included in a questionnaire at their home address. They must be included in the Household Listing Section.
2. Children with parents who live apart
Children with parents who live apart should be included on the questionnaire at the address where they spend the majority of their time. They should be included in the Household Listing Section.
If they live equally between two addresses, they should be included at the address where they are staying overnight on May 20th, 2026, in the Household Listing Section.
3. Persons from outside of Bermuda
Persons from outside of Bermuda whose total length of stay in Bermuda will be 6 months or more should be included on the questionnaire where they usually stay. They should be included in the Household Listing Section.
If their total length of stay is less than 6 months, they should only be included as a visitor on the questionnaire at the address they were staying on May 20th, 2026, in the Household Listing questions. Do not include these persons as usual residents.
4. Households away on May 20th 2026
If this address was unoccupied overnight on May 20th, 2026, because the whole household was away, the questionnaire should be completed as soon as possible upon their return.
5. Roomers or boarders
Roomers or boarders who live full time at their lodging address should be included on the questionnaire where they lodge, in the Household Listing Section.
6. Unrelated households (house/roommates)
In households where all household members are unrelated and are house/roommates, one of the household members must identify himself/herself as the Household Reference Person. They must complete the Household Listing Section, the Housing Section and ensure the Population Sections are completed for each household member. The Population Sections for each unrelated household member may be completed by the Household Reference Person or separately by requesting a private Population Questionnaire.
7. Persons temporarily away from home
Anyone who is temporarily away from their home on May 20th, 2026 should be included at their home address in the Household Listing Section. This includes people who are:
- staying, or expecting to stay, in hospital for less than 6 months
- temporarily in prison on remand (for any length of time)
- living away from home while working, on holiday or travelling (unless outside of Bermuda for more than 6 months)
